Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that this activity become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
